Here we are again to report you some other signals that the day record labels 1.0 will die is near…

We are referring about a couple of interviews and news we found around the web.

The first is an interview to Josh Homme from Queens of the stone age reported by Kings of A&R.

A little extract from it below:

“Fuck the labels man, they suck. The last thing they’re stripping down is their own expense accounts and shit. I mean, Jimmy Iovine of Interscope Records takes a private jet or rides first class to tell a band they don’t get tour support.”

The second interview we want to report to you is from 50 cent (found on TechCrunch) : changing the music genre doesn’t change the feeling the artists get with the old labels. (The key parts: file sharing doesn’t hurt the artist, concert and merchandise sales are the key to profiting from music, not direct music sales and the music industry is clueless and busy peddling ringtones. siamo ancora qui per riportavi alcuni nuovi segnali che il giorno in cui le case discografiche 1.0 moriranno è vicino…

Ci stiamo riferendo a un paio di interviste e notizie che abbiamo trovato sul web.

La prima è a Josh Homme dei Queens of the stone age, riportata da Kings of A&R.

That man is Doug Morris from Universal, and he is symbol of the music industry that choose to fight the future instead of knowing and interacting with it. But they can’t win, they have ALREADY lose.

Riguarda le VECCHIE case discografiche e le NUOVE tecnologie, a nostro parere 2 parole che proprio non vanno d’accordo!

Quest’uomo è Doug Morris di Universal, ed è il simbolo dell’industria musicale che sceglie di combattere il uturo invece di conoscerlo e interagire con esso. Ma non possono vincere, hanno GIA perso.

So… big record labels are cutting off their staff.

SonyBMG was the first, then EMI and now Universal Island Def Jam…

Do you know who were the first to have their deal closed? A&R… Sarah from Stolen Transmission is an example, but she rocks! and she will continue in finding and helping new bands!

Is it possible?? Major labels can’t understand how much important the A&R role is. A&R is the future. Well, we imagine they’re committing suicide and these cuts just underline the highway that leads to failure they took time ago. We already said it, and we are more and more convinced about it.

And while all this happens, record sales are getting down and down. A&R King reports that the best seller album of 2007 is “High School Musical 07″ with 2,5 millions of copies sold. Last year the bestseller was again “High School Musical” (in the 2006 edition) but with 3,7 millions of copies sold. You might think that “Come on over” by Shania Twain sold 15,4 millions and “Metallica” by Metallica sold 14,8 millions…

Back to A&Rs, they will not disappear, they will all gather in NuRevRecords that aims to be the biggest A&R team ever!!!

E cosi le grandi case discografiche stanno licenziando il personale.

SonyBMG è stata la prima, poi EMI e ora Universal Island Def Jam…

Indovinate chi sono stati i primi a vedersi rescisso il contratto? Gli A&R… Sarah di Stolen Transmission è un esempio, ma lei non molla! e continuera a cercare e aiutare le nuove bands!

E’ possibile?? Le Major non capiscono quanto sia imporante il ruolo dell’A&R. L’A&R è il futuro. Bene, immaginiamo che esse si stiano suicidando e questi tagli semplicemente sottolineano l’autostrada che conduce al fallimento che hanno intrapreso tempo fa. Lo abbiamo gia detto, e ne siam sempre piu convinti.

E mentre succede tutto questo, le vendite dei dischi crollano sempre di più. A&R Kings riporta che l’album più venduto del 2007 è “High School Musical 07″ con 2,5 milioni di copie. as you have seen in the previous post we took our first step, “waitingfor.nurevrecords.com” is now online and we will tell you about its first days very soon.
While waiting, we post a second part of the interview we did few weeks ago to our other friends bloggers about the situation of the Music Industry nowadays.
This time we’ll speak with Dan from “Podcomplex“, Jason from Musick in the head and Alberto from Teladuepuntozero.

Do you remember our questions? we ask our friends:
1)How do you think the Music Industry will react to the choice made by Radohead&co.?
2)Due to the success that the Radiohead’s enterprise is gaining and the big number of band following, do you think that this is the best choice for famous bands?
3) What about the new bands and their condition in this new scenario

All of them are sure that Record LabelS must evolve and change: it is not possible fighting this revolution anymore! Alberto also says that Music is not going bad, each aspect of music business works good, only CD sales are going down.

For what concern the second question Dan says that any band that already has a large fanbase would be absolutely crazy to not follow Radiohead’s lead. Alberto, too is sure that this will be the main way for famous artists.

About new bands and their future in this scenario, Dan has a very interesting point of view: “new bands should also distribute their own work via their own website (in both digital and CD formats). The problem then is one of promotion, so the ‘promotion deal’ will effectively replace the old industry ‘record deal”.

In Jason opinion, bands will always need experts, because they’re not…here’s what he says:No longer do bands need CDs manufactured and shipped all over the world, nor do they need the labels accounting systems to dole out their (little) bit of cash. But what they do need is marketing, promotion, tour support, management services. Sure, some bands will opt to do this on their own – but it is not easy to do it well. Experts will arise to offer these services – some will be new companies founded for solely this purpose and others will be traditional “labels” that successfully changed themselves.

This is NOT the official NuRevRecords website. This is a sort of pre-site where we’ll begin to build the official one all together (posting & choosing logos, graphics templates and taking other important decisions). Here you’ll find out more.

Through the “Waiting For Site“, all of us will choose the first 10 bands who will win a free membership to the next-to-come NuRevRecords Label.

On this pre-site, you’ll also have the possibility to play and gain the first points for the big NuRevGame, that will be revealed soon.

Questo NON e’ il sito ufficiale di NuRevRecords bensì una sorta di presito dove insieme inizieremo a costruire quello ufficiale (dal logo, al template grafico, ad altre importanti decisioni) Qui troverete maggiori info.

We got more than 150 visits in these past 3 days on our latest post, we received a lot of e-mails, and even many comments on our myspace! Thank you again our friends! Many thanks also to fabri, steven and bmc who wrote directly on this blog.

We’ve asked for your replies but we couldn’t imagine such a big partecipation!

This means that all of us will be called to join this new music revolution and take all the decisions necessary to run a label.

NuRevrecords can offer you the chance to get heard, totally produced and promoted. All you have to do is join us and, if the community will love your music, then you will be one of our artist. We will completely produce you from the recording to the distribution and promotion!
No speeches about profit and commerciability of your art, we just look for the quality of music and we’ll only trust in what the community will choose.

Ok, siamo quasi pronti.

Ora la cosa davvero importante per noi è sapere cosa pensate che NuRev possa fare per voi e cosa volete che faccia per voi!
Come abbiamo detto nel post precedente il primo progetto di NuRev sarà NuRevRecords. Bene, si tratta della prima vera casa discografica 2.0! Questo significa che tutti noi saremo chiamati a unirci a questa nuova rivoluzione musicale e prendere tutte le decisioni necessarie a portare avanti un’etichetta.

E’ chiaro che questo puo essere molto utile per i gruppi, per farsi sentire, e per ognuno di noi, amanti della nuova filosofia della musica diffusa via internet!.

Suoni in un gruppo? Sei un artista solista?

NuRevRecords puo offrirti la possibilità di farti sentire, essere totalmente prodotto e promosso. Tutto ciò che devi fare è unirti a noi e, se la community apprezzerà la tua musica, allora sarai uno dei nostri artisti. Noi ti penseremo a tutta la produzione, dalla registrazione alla distribuzione e promozione!

finally we’re almost ready to introduce to you the first NuRev project…just few days remain, so begin getting ready for the New Revolution! While finishing last things we have had the opportunity to learn something more about what the blogosphere thinks about the latest events in music industry (the choices of Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails and so on) by asking directly to some bloggers in a little nice interview.

Many of you answered and that’s why we will publish a second part of this post in the near future.

Our first question was: How do you think the Music Industry will react to the choice made by Radohead&co.?

Gerd Leonhard, from mediafuturist.com, first of all thinks that these bands are doing what the major record labels should have done five years ago: offering partnerships to artists and their managers, sharing real profit (and responsibility), engaging with artists on all levels, not just to sell copies of plastic (or of zeros and ones, for that matter).

And it is from this that Gerd points out that major label will not be welcome this game well, because: they have little expertise in it, they have none or few people that can run something like this, by and large, they have a monopolist’s mindset (which is not going to work here), they have aptly and with great dedication eradicated trust across the board: with artists, managers, producers AND the users. (we totally agree with you, Gerd!)

For Mark Ramsey of Hear 2.0 instead, they won’t react because this is not necessarily a trend; it’s an example of one superstar band flexing marketplace muscles that most bands don’t possess. (yes but, by now, it’s not just a question of ONE band..)

Then Bruce Houghton from Hypebot, Ourdigitalmusic and The Rock Dose answers to our second question (Due to the success that the Radiohead’s enterprise is gaining and the big number of band following, do you think that this is the best choice for famous bands?) this way: I think it’s a possible choice for all kinds of bands as it allows an artist to monetize their relationship with their fans in a flexible Music 2.0 way. Big bands will make bigger money at it than little ones. It’s just supply and demand.

On the other hand Mark says that in his opinion the “success” of this choice has yet to be assessed, it has just generated attention, but the NEXT time they do this it will be old news and there will be NO attention (We’ve found this opinion really interesting, Mark! what about you all out there?).

Our last question was about the new band and their condition in this new scenario. Many of you was afraid about the risk for new band to die without any promotion or chance to get heard in this ocean: bigger band will be able to do without major but how could a new artist get traffic and visibility for his website?

Mark is quite sure about it: No chance with this approach. They’re better off giving away their songs and making their bucks from gigs and collectibles.Which is exactly what they do.

After that Bruce remember what we are really discussing about and says: In the end, however, your music has to speak to somebody for any of your efforts to matter. It still all starts with the song. (how disagree with this? great words dear Bruce!!)

What about us? Well, in our opinion major label as we know them are gonna die in a very short time…let’s see if they will be able to reinvent themselves in a 2.0 way! For what that concern the bigger bands, we think this is surely the best way for reaching their fans and gaining more from their works! And last but not least, the new bands…well… for them there will be NuRev Records…FASTEN YOUR SEATBELTS!!!!

Few days ago, 8 AM. Someone sent me an sms, I (Sadneero) wake up and start groping my way in the dark for my mobile. Finally I found it and read the message, it was from Zhaul: “Madonna leaves Warner Bros!” and she’s the third artist moving a step in this direction since nearly one month. Today we also discovered that Oasis and Jamiroquai too, are following the “anti-major” path traced out by Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails.

h 23.13, at Zhaul’s home. Post after post, blog after blog, we understand what the net users think about this new revolution, and we’re thrilled perceiving the enthusiasm of all.

In our opinion in few months more and more bands will follow this direction, because by now it’s plain that it could only bring benefits for them and for their fans. How will the old dinosaurs react to all that? Will they have the strength for changing themselves or will they die overwhelmed by new technologies that are just highlighting their uselessness? We are sure that the old system’s days are counted, time has come for the entire community to directly choose what it really want to listen to.

We were sure that something like that would have to happen…but not so early! Our decision of starting with music was linked to this sensation, but time is already ripe. The tsunami that will destroy the old music label 1.0 has just started. We will be there waiting for it, equipped with surf in order to ride it and to build the future starting from what the old system unthinkingly persisted in fighting at the cost of their lives: free knoweldge, mp3, p2p, common license.

8 del mattino di qualche giorno fa, mi arriva un sms, io (Sadneero) mi sveglio e inizio a ravanare nel buio cercando il cellulare. Leggo il messaggio, è Zhaul: “Madonna lascia la Warner Bros“! ed è il terzo artista che compie un passo del genere nel giro di circa un mese. Stasera abbiamo scoperto inoltre che anche Oasis e Jamiroquai sembrano intenzionati a seguire la scia anti-major tracciata da Radiohead e Nine Inch Nails.

h 23.13, siamo qui a casa di Zhaul. Post dopo post, blog dopo blog, ci stiamo facendo un’idea di quello che la rete pensa riguardo questa nuova rivoluzione, e siamo estasiati nel percepire l’entusiasmo da parte di tutti.

Secondo noi da qui a pochi mesi sempre più band compiranno questo passo dato che oramai è chiaro che ciò non porta che vantaggi per loro e per il pubblico. Come reagiranno a quel punto i vecchi dinosauri? Avranno la forza di rinnovarsi o moriranno schiacciati dalle nuove tecnologie che non stanno facendo altro che sottolinearne l’inutilità? Noi crediamo che il vecchio sistema abbia i giorni contati, ormai i tempi sono maturi per far si che la comunità intera scelga direttamente quello che vuole ascoltare.

Noi eravamo certi che sarebbe successa una cosa del genere a breve…ma non cosi presto!! La decisione di partire con la musica infatti era legata proprio a queste sensazioni, ma i tempi si sono rivelati molto piu ristretti di quello che avevamo immaginato; l’onda anomala che distruggerà le vecchie case discografiche 1.0 è gia partita. Noi siamo li ad aspettarla, attrezzati di surf per cavalcarla e costruire il futuro partendo da cio che il vecchio sistema si è ostinato ciecamente a combattere a costo della propria vita: diffusione libera, mp3, p2p e common license.
